I’ve been taking
photos since around 1950, starting in my early teens with a box camera
taking 8 photos 6x9 cm on 120 roll film. As a scientist I have always been
fascinated by what photography can do, as much from the technical side as by
the pictorial results. Freezing action with flash, speeding time with
time-lapse, slowing time with high-speed cinephotography, micro- and
electron micro-photography, as examples.
I photograph anything and
everthing that interests me, seeking to capture forever a memorable visual
(and even unsuccessfully because there is no sound) musical experience.
My objective is to create
pictures which appeal to everyone and not the more “artistic” and, as I see
it, experimental photography nurtured by the Foto Bond Nederland, which
leaves me cold.
I like the work of the
contemporary Dutch master,Martin Kers; the romantic pictures of David
Hamilton; the low key portraits of Karsh from 50 years ago.
On early retirement, I started
giving photography courses at a beginners’ level, explaining both
technicalities which influence quality and the pictorial content which
influence the successfulness of a picture. With teaching the importance of
composition in photography in my courses, I now consciously concentrate on
incorporating a strong compositional element in my own pictures.
The cursisten from the courses,
who wanted to go further with photography, provided the basis for membership
of this Fotoworkshop which I set up in 1998. |
